A night out with friends from work tonight for a bit of a change from the election fever!

It was good to catch up with John, whose official leaving do I missed earlier in the year because of full council.

We met up at liverpool street station and walked down to the lovely Tayyabs which I would reccomend wholeheartedly, although dont forget to bring your own alcohol if you want to drink.

It was nice to be away from politics for a short while, although the talk of the table was about the leaders debate that was on TV tonight (I recorded it to watch now – sad political junky that I am)

When a work friend asked me what I was doing Saturday night, I told him we had friends coming over for dinner.

He remarked about how nice it would be to have a “night off” from politics.

And then I thought about it……

The couple who are coming for dinner are both District Councillors. My wife and I are both District Councillors… All four of us on the same Council. But its worse than that, it wont just be four Councillors round the dinner table.

Between the four of us there will be the Group Leader and Group Whip. The Chairman of the Conservative Association and the Deputy Chairman Political. The Chairman and Secretary of the Ladies Committe of the Association.

Yes – Politics take up a fair chunk of our life and time.

So to misquote the advert

Ingrediants £30
Wine £20
The ability to get to dessert without talking politics – Priceless!

It’s Friday night.

My wife and I have a babysitter!

So are we out on the town like most other 30 something couples in the same situation?

Er…. Not exactly.

My wife (the other Cllr Johnson) is also one of the key members of the Harlow Conservatives Ladies Committee, an organisation that exists to arrange fund raising events for the local party, and gives us all a chance to unwind.

Just not in the way that most “Normal” people do.

So this Friday evening finds us attending what we call “Supper Club”

About 30 of us are at a local hotel, having a nice meal, and listening to David Gauke MP, who for those who don’t know is a member of the Shadow Treasury team and MP for SW Herts (our neighbouring county).

David is an interesting guy and speaks very well – about the mess that the government has helped get our economy into and about why it is so important for us to send Robert Halfon to Westminster at the next election, as part of a fresh Conservative government.

I also get called upon to do the honours as Auctioneer for a couple of nice watches, to help raise some more cash for leaflet printing (we do print and deliver a LOT!)

All in all a very good evening, and I did get the chance to unwind and have a glass (or two) of wine.
